With Unharvested, composer Kevin Keller gazes into the past by returning to his acoustic roots, while also looking into the future to embrace new digital download technology. Commissioned by the Amy Marshall Dance Company, Keller's Sonata for Cello and Piano (2006) is based on the themes of "Unharvested", which was originally composed and recorded for Keller's 1996 release Intermezzo. Starting with the sonata's second movement "Andante", which is the original work re-scored for cello and piano, Keller then composed the first and third movements as musical "bookends", both exploring and extending the original themes, with further variations on tempo and timbre. Keller explains, "Over the 10 years since Intermezzo was released, "Unharvested" has remained in my repertoire, going through many permutations, starting with the original work for cello and electronic orchestra, and eventually being distilled down to a cello and piano duet." It was this version that caught the attention of choreographer Amy Marshall, who then commissioned the full sonata. Her dance work, also titled "Unharvested", received its premier in 2006 and has been an audience favorite ever since. Unharvested is Keller's first DAD release - a Digital Album Download available online through I-Tunes, Rhapsody, and other download sites. Driven by Meena Cho's emotion-charged performance, the Sonata for Cello and Piano signals a new direction in Kevin Keller's musical path. |
